James St. John began his career in construction with Ironworkers Local 721 where he started his apprenticeship in 1989 and is still a proud member today. He was the first Full-Time Joint Health & Safety Committee Worker Co-Chair of the Central Ontario Building Trades (COBT) for the Pearson International Airport Expansion, Terminal One in 2002 and remained as Co-Chair until the end of 2003. During that time, he was the recipient of the John M. Beck Award that recognizes the outstanding contributions of a project-based Joint Health & Safety Committee active in Ontario construction. He was instrumental in having the Ontario Construction Secretariat adopt the COBT’s Full-Time Worker Co-Chair Program as one of their “Best Practices”. In 2015, James was presented with the Ontario Construction Secretariat’s Tripartite Leadership Award in recognition of his commitment and lasting contribution to the development and support of the Tripartite process.
In 2004, James joined the COBT as a Business Agent until 2010 when he was then elected to the position of Business Manager / Financial Secretary. James was the driving force behind the creation of the CEIR (Construction Exposure Incident Reporting) Program, working closely with the Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) and, at that time, the Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO). He is also currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Workers’ Health & Safety Centre (WHSC), a part of Tridel’s B.O.L.T. (Building Opportunities for Life Today) Wrap Around Committee which provides youth with access to training, education, and career opportunities in the construction industry, a member of the Pinball Clemons Foundation Charitable Partners Committee and a member of the Provincial Government’s Prevention Council.
James is currently the Business Manager / Financial Secretary of The Central Ontario Building Trades and the President / Director of the Hammer Heads Program. The Building Trades is an affiliation of 25 local unions representing tens of thousands of men and women in the skilled trades involved in Residential, Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional construction projects from Oakville to Trenton and north to Parry Sound. The Building Trades created the Hammer Heads Program to provide youth from under-resourced and Indigenous communities in the Greater Toronto Area with an opportunity to explore a career in the skilled construction trades.

Il a été le premier coprésident à temps plein du comité mixte de santé et de sécurité des métiers de la construction du centre de l'Ontario pour l'expansion de l'aéroport international Pearson, terminal 1, en 2002, et il est resté coprésident jusqu'à la fin de 2003. Au cours de cette période, il a reçu le prix John M. Beck, qui reconnaît les contributions exceptionnelles d'un comité mixte sur la santé et la sécurité dans le secteur de la construction en Ontario. Il a joué un rôle déterminant dans l'adoption par le Secrétariat ontarien à la construction du programme de coprésidence des travailleurs à temps plein des métiers de la construction du centre de l'Ontario comme l'une de ses " meilleures pratiques ". En 2015, James a reçu le prix du leadership tripartite du Secrétariat ontarien à la construction en reconnaissance de son engagement et de sa contribution durable au développement et au soutien du processus tripartite.
En 2004, James a rejoint métiers de la construction du centre de l'Ontario en tant qu'agent d'affaires jusqu'en 2010, date à laquelle il a été élu au poste de directeur des affaires / secrétaire financier. James a été la force motrice derrière la création du programme CEIR
(Construction Exposure Incident Reporting), travaillant en étroite collaboration avec la Commission de la sécurité professionnelle et de l'assurance contre les accidents du travail (CSPAAT) et, à l'époque, la Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO). Il est également membre du conseil d'administration du Workers' Health & Safety Centre (WHSC), membre du comité B.O.L.T. (Building Opportunities for Life Today) de Tridel qui offre aux jeunes l'accès à la formation, à l'éducation et aux possibilités de carrière dans l'industrie de la construction, membre du comité des partenaires caritatifs de la Pinball Clemons Foundation et membre du conseil de prévention du gouvernement provincial.
